📋 About This Mod
This feature is deprecated with Community Shaders 1. 4. 7. It is included in the base install.
OVERVIEW
The Inverse Square Lighting addon allows for lighting in Skyrim to use a more realistic lighting attenuation that closely approximates real world light behavior. Skyrim only includes a crude falloff function that can cause lights to look like a spotlight - very bright in the center with harsh edges - using the inverse square falloff from this addon will improve the way the light tapers off for a more natural look.
This addon will not modify any existing lighting and does nothing by itself. You must also install other lighting mods designed for Inverse Square Lighting to take advantage of the more realistic lighting falloff.
FEATURES
-
[]New inverse square lighting falloff function with settings for the intensity, size, and cutoff for each light source
[]Automatic light radius calculation with specified cutoff value, and intensity fades out smoothly to the specified cutoff
[]Practically zero performance difference to regular falloff lights of identical radius
[]An in-game Light Editor for modifying light parameters that allows mod authors to preview lighting changes in real-time
INSTALLATION & REQUIREMENTS
-
[]Install Community Shaders and all its requirements.
[]Install Light Limit Fix (this is required!)
[]Install this mod below it.
USAGE
FOR END USERS
Simply install this mod if required by a lighting mod you are using.
FOR LIGHTING MOD AUTHORS
Implementing inverse square falloff as simply 1/d^2 is impractical, the light would be infinitely bright at the source and travel for an infinite distance. This algorithm solves the infinite source brightness by giving a size to the light source - this size means there is now a finite brightness at a distance of zero and the brightness near the source varies based on the size. The infinite distance problem is solved by using a cutoff v

Inverse Square Lighting for Community Shaders replaces the default point light falloff with a physically-based inverse square curve, making lighting behave more realistically. This feature is deprecated as of Community Shaders 1.4.7, so it's only relevant for users on older versions. With 5,794 endorsements and 342,732 downloads, it's a popular choice for enhancing visual fidelity.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Huge community trust — 5,794 endorsements and over 342k downloads show it's a go-to for lighting tweaks.
- Simple, focused change: swaps the default falloff for a physically accurate inverse square curve, which makes torches and lamps feel way more natural.
- Lightweight and easy to install — just drop it in and let Community Shaders handle the rest.
⚠️ Cons
- Deprecated with Community Shaders 1.4.7 — if you're on the latest version, this mod does nothing and you'll need to look elsewhere.
- Only affects point lights, so don't expect changes to directional or ambient lighting — it's a niche tweak.
- No detailed documentation or screenshots provided, so you're flying blind on exactly how it looks until you test it in-game.
For Skyrim modders who are still on Community Shaders 1.4.6 or earlier and want a quick, realistic lighting upgrade without overhauling their whole setup. Skip it if you're on the latest Community Shaders — it's already built in or replaced.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Check your Community Shaders version in your mod manager — if it's 1.4.7 or newer, this mod is redundant, so don't bother installing it.
- If you're on an older version, install this after Community Shaders and let it overwrite the lighting files — no extra patches needed.
- Test in a dungeon or at night with a torch to see the difference; the falloff change is most noticeable with close-range point lights.
