📋 About This Mod

"The division of Carex, the true sedges, has caused conflict among Imperial botanists since the very definition of the genus at the end of the first era. Numbering anywhere from a few hundred to nearly two thousand, the identification and study of distinct species has birthed its own field, caricology. Despite a long and varied history of use, Nordic botannical records fail to classify sedges in any reliable or organized fashion. References made to specific 'foreign' sedges, such as 'mournhold sedges', indicate at least a concept of locality. As a result, the study and classification of Skyrim's unique sedges is only in its infancy. By my own observation at least fourteen varieties exist within the county known as 'The Pale,' but this is hardly an exhaustive study."

- Narrelia Caro, Botanist

This mod was supposed to be Carex fuliginosa, the short-leaved sedge, but as Narrelia kindly poined out, a number of other Carex species look quite similar, and I couldn't get a reliable, unique definition of C. fuliginosa that I could use to differentiate it. Instead I will simply consider this mod a generic member of the Carex genus, modeled off a mix of C. fuliginosa, C. hirta, C. elynoides, and C. utriculata.

I wanted to somehow make a reference to the Skaal using sedge to insulate their boots and coats, but didn't want the flavor text to get too long. The diversity of Carex also means there's a species for just about any ailment in any culture, which makes it a good canidate for the model of an alchemy ingredient. I didn't know anything about sedges before doing this model; but they're actually common where I live, too.

Ashen Spiky Grass for Hearthfire: This mod comes with a Hearthfire planter model for the ashen spiky grass of Solstheim, but you'll need a mod that actually adds the harvestable to the game to see it. This mod works out-of-the-box with More Plants and Recipes SE, but if you use a different mod you'll need to move the byohhouseingrdspikygrassash01.nif from the moreplants folder to the appropriate folder.

Q: How do I get the seasonal variations?

A: You'll need Seasons of Skyrim and a mod that adds the appropriate swap info for spiky grass (like Shrubs of Snow or Seasonal Landscapes). I didn't find any mods that add all four seasons or Solstheim's spiky grass, but if anyone ever does, the models are there.

NOTE: There doesn't seem to be a given syntax for how to name seasonal nifs, so if you use a mod like Seasonal Alchemy you will need to rename the files to match that mod.

Q: How do they look alongside grass mods?

A: Carex are of moderate height; this combined with the fact they're at the water's edge where there's little grass means they should be visible. That said, Carex blends a little too well with the coastline texture at times - a reliable way of finding it is

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Community-approved with 486 endorsements and over 24k downloads.
  • Subtle visual improvement that fits the game's aesthetic without overhauling everything.
  • Covers Dragonborn DLC and Hearthfire, so you get consistent grass across the board.

⚠️ Cons

  • Only changes grass models—no texture or color changes, so the effect is subtle.
  • Last updated in 2023, so it might not be compatible with the latest Skyrim updates or mods.
  • Potential conflicts with other grass mods that replace the same models.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim players who want a slight, natural-looking tweak to grass without a full overhaul. If you're into realistic flora mods or want to reduce the 'spiky' look, this is for you. Skip if you're looking for dramatic visual changes or if you already use a comprehensive grass mod.
