Ayira The Forsworn Shaman

Sitting cross-legged in her hide-covered shelter and mending a rend in the hem of her leather skirt, Ayira frowned in annoyance when a clansman suddenly appeared at the entrance of her shelter.  He was casting a dark shadow over her hands.  "Go away," she growled, not looking up.  "You're blocking my light."

It wasn't just one clansman who was standing outside her shelter.  It was two of them, surly bully boys who'd been sent by the Clan Chief to drag Ayira from her abode and frog-march her over to the clan's ceremonial ring.  And that's exactly what they intended to do.

"Take your hands off me!" Ayira cried as two pairs of strong hands suddenly reached down and pulled her to her feet.  Struggling in vain, she found herself unable to talk when one of the men viciously placed a wide strip of cloth across her angry mouth and vigorously tied it off behind her head.  She was in the process of summoning one of her spirit minions when she was suddenly rapped behind the ear with something hard.  The blow was heavy enough to make her briefly see stars.  Just before she wilted into unconsciousness Ayira saw the busybody, Naminni, scuttle into her shelter and kneel before the wooden chest where Ayira kept her prized possessions.

Naminni laughed wickedly as the bully boys dragged away the woman she hated most of all.  Ayira was everything that short, crook-backed, plain-looking Naminni was not: tall, graceful, beautiful, and smart.  Ayira was so smart that she'd become a talented shaman in half the time that it normally took someone to master the shaman's arcane repertoire of spells and enchantments.  To make matters worse, Ayira was third in line to become Clan Chief.  Not the least talented in magic or warfare, Niminni was good at two things: spying on people and snitching on them whenever she discovered something that would get them in trouble.  She came naturally to snitching on people; she'd been doing it ever since she'd learned to talk.  It was her whispers in Clan Chief Zug's ears that had caused Zug to sic her thugs upon Ayira.

As she poked through Ayira's possessions Naminni suddenly cackled with delight when she thought about Ayira's impending disgrace.  She'd long suspected that Ayira was secretly wearing forbidden Imperial-style clothes and shoes, despite the clan's ancient taboo.  Her piggy little eyes widened with delight when she found what she was looking for.  Cackling yet again, she scooped up the outlandish things and headed straight for the Clan Chief's shelter.  Ayira was as good as dead.
