Vortex MCP

Description

Vortex extension that runs an MCP (Model Context Protocol) 2. 0 server inside Vortex, so an AI agent like Claude can list, install, enable/disable, deploy, and purge mods, and switch profiles/games, all through one local endpoint. No clicking through the UI for every action. It also should be able to fix conflicts!

Installation instructions

1. Download the zip and add it in Vortex like any other extension (Extensions page, drag the zip in), or unzip it into %APPDATA%\Vortex\plugins\vortex-mcp by hand.

2. Restart Vortex.

3. The server listens on http://127. 0. 0. 1:3701/mcp by default (change the port with the VORTEX_MCP_PORT env var). Point your MCP client at it, e.g. for Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http vortex http://127. 0. 0. 1:3701/mcp

4. By default only read tools are exposed. Set the VORTEX_MCP_TOKEN env var before starting Vortex if you want write access (install, deploy, switch profile, etc), and pass it as an Authorization: Bearer header from your client.

Main features

Read tools: mods, profiles, load order, plugin/LOOT details, downloads, categories, notifications, mod rules and conflicts, runtime errors, orphaned/missing files, Nexus update checks, all pulled live.

Write tools (only when a token is set): switch or clone profiles, enable/disable mods, dispatch any Vortex action or api call, launch the game, restart Vortex.

Reflection based discovery: scan_extension_actions reads every installed extension's compiled code on disk to find dispatchable actions Vortex itself doesn't publish through its API, so new/updated extensions are usable without waiting on an update to this tool.

Safety: confidential state (Nexus API key, OAuth tokens) is always redacted from responses, writes can be guarded against acting on a stale profile/game assumption, and the server only binds to localhost with DNS rebinding protection.

Requirements

Vortex itself. An MCP client that speaks Streamable HTTP, such as Claude Code or Claude Desktop (with the mcp-remote bridge for stdio-only clients), or anything else following the MCP spec.
