Great Wild Goose Pagoda (World Wonder)

"He has brought 657 sacred scriptures from the countries he traveled, translated them and spread the great work. He guided clouds of mercy from the west, and brought showers of dharma to the east. The lost sacred teachings are now complete, the sinful mortal folks are now redeemed." - Emperor Taizong of Tang, Preface to the Tripitaka Sacred Teachings Built in the Daci'en Temple complex in 652. This multi-storied brick pagoda was built to keep hundreds of Sanskrit sutras, brought by Tripitaka Master Xuanzang from India to Chang'an via the Silk Road. The Great Wild Goose Pagoda has witnessed not only the translation works of Xuanzang, but also the successes of numberless scholars of the many dynasties - there had been a tradition that candidates who passed the imperial examination would write their names on the pagoda, and "leaving a name on the pagoda of wild goose" has become a synonym of "passing the imperial examination". The Tripitaka of Buddhism is the collective name for Sutra Pitaka (sutras), Vinaya Pitaka (disciplines) and Abhidhamma Pitaka (discourses), and those who are proficient in all three are honored as Tripitaka Masters. The most famous Tripitaka Master in Chinese history was Xuanzang. Concerned about the inconsistency of Buddhist teachings throughout the Tang Dynasty, he traveled to India via the Silk Road to retrieve several hundred volumes of Sanskrit sutras, which he translated at the Daci'en Temple. Based on his journey, Wu Cheng'en, a writer of later generations, composed the well-known novel "Journey to the West". Great Wild Goose Pagoda Grants a Tripitaka Master.
