Its exterior walls are coated with snow-white shikkui (Japanese traditional lime plaster made of materials like slaked lime and shells), and its shape resembles that of an heron spreading its wings, earning it the honorable reputation of "White Heron Castle". Originally built in the 14th century, the castle was rebuilt by daimyos like Kuroda Yoshitaka and Ikeda Terumasa during the Sengoku period, and many defensive designs were added like maze-like roads and finely arranged arrow towers, but the castle was never tested in battle as the Sengoku period came to an end. Himeji Castle survived the fires of the Meiji period and the air raids of World War II without suffering any major damage to the city itself, and the "Warless Castle" embraces the dawn of the new era, accompanied by its many legends, such as Osakabe-hime hidden in the castle and the kaidan (ghost story) of Banshu Sarayashiki.
