Loulan was an ancient kingdom built around an oasis, and acted as a commercial hub and strategic hold on the Silk Road. The name “Loulan” first appeared in Treatise on the Xiongnu in the Records of the Grand Historian, as Modu Chanyu of the Xiongnu boasted his conquest of Loulan and other nearby states. After the Loulan King was assassinated by a Han envoy, the kingdom was renamed Shanshan and became a vassal of the Han Dynasty. Various Chinese dynasties like the Han Dynasty and Cao Wei put the region under control with the Tuntian method, by sending soldiers and settlers that acted as farmers during peace time. The old Loulan City eventually became abandoned due to a mixture of reasons, including the changing of course of the Tarim River and the tumultous situations of the Sixteen Kingdoms period. When the Buddhist monk Faxian visited the place, he recorded in his Record of Buddhist Kingdoms that “there was not a bird or a beast in this place, all that one could mark the way were bones of the dead”. “Clouds over Qinghai Lake darken the snowy mountains, a lone city gazes upon the Yuman Pass from a distance.
