Merrick's Joan (Flemish)

Joan of Constantinople was Countess of Flanders. She ruled alone from the age of 14, until her death 40 years later. During her life she granted charters to cities, granting them greater freedoms and growing their economy, and selectively exempted settlers from property taxes to help promote an influx of workers. She was also a known supporter of various religious orders, founding many monasteries and hospice communities. She played a role in improving a woman's position in religion.
