Total fur coverage determines how well your Expie holds on to body heat: a shorter coat helps you cool off, while a long one keeps you warm.

Panting is the primary way Expies cool down, at the cost of extra thirst. Like most furred mammals, Expies no longer rely on sweating to shed heat. Slower breathing makes panting less effective.

A long coat holds on to water and dries more slowly. Wet fur also adds to encumbrance.

➠ Dynamic Coats ➠

Fur grows and sheds in response to the climate around you. Each limb has its own coat. Injured skin slows regrowth and can cause shedding, while radiation sickness causes rapid hair loss. Keratin boosters let your coat grow beyond its normal length. A disfigured head can hold less fur.

Fur also provides a little armour on each limb. A full coat reduces damage by 12% on an otherwise unarmoured limb; maximum overgrowth reaches 25%. Bare skin adds no protection.

✄ Trimming ✄

Use any tool with a cutting quality on a limb in the health panel to trim fur off that limb. Higher quality means a cleaner, more consistent cut; low quality or a worn edge makes it easier to nick yourself. Trimming also takes away the dirt caught in the fur you remove.

When a tool could also amputate the limb, you'll be asked whether to Trim fur or Amputate first.

Long coats take longer to wash clean, while short coats are quicker. Thick or bloodied fur also makes the bandaging minigame more sluggish.

Fur coverage shows directly on your Expie's body, in the health panel, and around the limb in the bandage and amputation minigames. Loose fur drifts off while you shed. Bare tails shrink and flatten; their shape can be adjusted in the configuration.
