The Texas Highway Patrol was voted the "sexist" uniforms in the country, with cowboy hats being standard issue.

Established in 1929 as the Texas Highway Motor Patrol, created in response to the surge in motor vehicle traffic and rising traffic violations and deaths.  Today, the Texas Highway Patrol is the largest state-level law enforcement agency in Texas, with over 3,500 sworn troopers (as of 2025). It enforces traffic laws, investigates crashes, responds to emergencies, secures the Texas Capitol Complex, and provides protection for the governor. The agency is divided into seven regions and 19 districts.

The Texas DPS Special Response Teams (SRT) are specialized tactical units within the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), operating on an "as needed" basis across each of the DPS regions. These teams are composed of a cross-section of state troopers from the Texas Highway Patrol, Criminal Investigations Division, and Texas Rangers, ensuring a coordinated response to high-risk incidents.  SRTs are activated when the risk of violence is high or has already occurred.  The Texas Rangers oversee the state’s tactical programs, including SRTs, SWAT, EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), and crisis negotiation units.  SRT teams perform high-risk wqarrant service, initial response to critical incidents including hostage rescue, active shooters, and barricaded suspects.  SRT teams also form Tactical Strike Teams deployed to assist US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in immigration enforcement operations.
