The Counter Assault Team (CAT) is a specialized tactical unit within the U. S. Secret Service's Special Operations Division (SOD). Established in 1979, its primary mission is to provide an offensive capability to the agency's fundamentally defensive protective operations. While the Presidential Protective Division (PPD) focuses on evacuating the protectee, CAT is tasked with diverting, suppressing, and neutralizing coordinated armed attacks against the President, Vice President, or other designated protectees.

The unit operates under the callsign "Hawkeye" when assigned to the President, often combined with the President's code name (e.g., "Hawkeye Renegade"). CAT members are distinct from other tactical units in that they are all commissioned Special Agents, whereas units like the Emergency Response Team (ERT) are primarily staffed by Uniformed Division officers

HAMMER team

The Hazardous Agent Mitigation & Medical Emergency Response (HAMMER) team is a specialized tactical unit within the U. S. Secret Service's Special Operations Division (SOD). Unlike the Counter Assault Team (CAT), which focuses on neutralizing armed attackers, HAMMER is dedicated to hazardous agent mitigation, emergency medical intervention, and extrication.

The primary mission of the HAMMER team is to support protective details by responding into hazardous, toxic, or lethal environments to locate, extract, decontaminate, and provide life-saving medical care to protectees. The team operates in close coordination with other tactical elements and medical units to ensure continuity of protection during complex incidents.
