FBI Enhanced SWAT

The FBI maintains a tiered structure for its tactical units, with Enhanced SWAT teams serving as a critical component between standard SWAT teams and the elite (HRT). There are nine to fourteen Enhanced SWAT teams, typically stationed in major metropolitan areas due to the higher volume of incidents and the need for a more robust response capability. These teams are larger than standard SWAT teams, potentially comprising up to 42 members, and are equipped with a wider array of tactical

weapons and methods, including advanced firearms like the M4 carbine and Heckler & Koch MP5, as well as ballistic shields, breaching tools, and specialized armored vehicles such as the Lenco BearCat and Oshkosh Alpha MRAP. Enhanced SWAT teams are designed to provide mission support to the HRT and are capable of responding to larger-scale threats, including hostage crises, aircraft and vehicle assaults, and operations involving weapons of mass destruction. They possess the capability to deploy to any location within the United States or abroad, supporting national security, American assets, and personnel overseas, or assisting military and intelligence operations. This global deployment capability distinguishes them from standard SWAT teams. While Enhanced SWAT team members are highly trained, they are not full-time tactical operators like HRT personnel; instead, they are FBI Special Agents who perform their regular investigative duties and are activated for tactical missions. The selection process for Enhanced SWAT is extremely rigorous, involving a two-week assessment that tests marksmanship, physical fitness,judgment,problem-solving, and communication skills. Members are recruited from among the best military and police organizations in the country, and the competition for these positions is intense. The FBI categorizes Enhanced SWAT operatives as equivalent to regular SWAT professionals for salary purposes, meaning their compensation is comparable and depends on factors like seniority, experience, and location. They receive a generous federal benefits package, including health and life insurance, retirement plans, and full retirement after 20 years of service. In 2019, the Enhanced SWAT teams were officially renamed the Special Operations Group (SOG) to better reflect their advanced training and role, with the group now headquartered at six major field offices.
