Description

Adds the Southern Pacific Railroad's GS4 class of locomotive to Railroader, and includes several paint schemes and detail models for you to play with!

Some of the features of this mod include:

- Several detail models to change up the look of the GS4, including the ability to disable the skirting

- Working mars light with correct movement pattern (switch to activate is on the fireman's side of the cab above the windows)

History

The GS4 class of steam locomotives were built for the Southern Pacific Railroad by the Lima Locomotive Works in two batches, one in March of 1941, and another in April of 1942. Taking much of their design from the earlier GS3 class, these engines would be put to work on the streamlined passenger trains the SP had, most famous of which being the Coast Daylight. These were capable machines, with 80 inch diameter drivers, 25. 5" x 32" cylinders, an maximum allowable working pressure of 300 PSI, and a fair factor of adhesion of 4. 16. All together, these engines put out 66,326 lbs of tractive effort, and sported a booster engine on the trailing truck that added an additional 13,000 lbs of TE (although this has not been simulated with this mod). Day after day, the GS4's were put to work on the Southern Pacific. While they were designed to pull passenger trains, in their later years (post WW2), they could be seen on different fast freight trains, once the diesels took over the streamliners.

By the end of 1957, all members of the GS4 class had been retired, with several of them already undergoing the process of being scrapped. A lucky locomotive, Southern Pacific 4449, was chosen to be preserved at Oaks Pioneer Park in Portland, Oregon as a display piece, leading to her being the only example of a GS4 to survive. Staying there until 1974, where she would be heavily vandalized, 4449 was chosen to pull the American Freedom Train, a display train that ran across the United States and parts of Canada from 1975 - 1976, showcasing the country's history. Her restoration would move swiftly, and on April 21, 1975, Southern Pacific 4449, now dressed in a stunning red, white, and blue livery, made her return to steam. She would then spend the following year touring across the country, meeting many other restored locomotives, and introducing steam to the next generation. Afterwards, Southern Pacific 4449 had a bit of a film career, most famously appearing in the film Tough Guys (1986). Today, she has made herself at home at the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation, alongside Spokane, Portland, and Seattle 700, and Union Pacific 3203 (formerly OR&N 197). As of writing this, 4449 is tired, and within the next few years will be going in to the shops for an overhaul, while 700 & 3203 pick up the slack in her stead.

CLW Trucks: Adds T107 Buckeye Steel Trucks, which are used on the GS4's tender
