📋 About This Mod
Strange Caves - A 2k Cave Retexture
Author: JWadd
Release Date: December 2, 2019
This started out as an experiment to create realistic stone (I'm a novice texturer).
The stone formations are admittedly strange, but with the feel (roughness) of actual stone.
No photo resources were used. I hope you enjoy it.
Instructions:
Extract to your Oblivion data directory. (Example "C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data")
Change log
Version 1. 1
- Improved dirt floor normal map in Updates
- Added Support for Better Dungeons mod (replacement meshes) in Optional Files
Since Better Dungeons uses a BSA, this shouldn't overwrite anything
These meshes come from a modders resource pack called Rock Resource by Sachiel
- Added Snu's Dungeons mod texture replacer in Optional Files
These will overwrite Snu's Dungeons default textures for normal caves
* A note about the screenshots: I use Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul with the darker dungeons option. The textures will likely appear brighter without that.
Strange Caves is a 2K cave retexture mod for Skyrim that offers an artistic take on stone, aiming to give caves a distinct look. It includes support for Better Dungeons and Snu's Dungeons, making it a niche choice for players seeking visual variety. With 173 endorsements and over 12,000 downloads, it has a modest following.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Artistic style stands out from typical retextures—if you want caves that look hand-painted, this delivers.
- Built-in support for Better Dungeons and Snu's Dungeons means less fiddling for modded setups.
- Solid download count (12,356) shows it's been tried by a decent chunk of the community.
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated in 2019—might have issues with newer Skyrim versions or other mods.
- Only 173 endorsements compared to downloads suggests some users didn't stick with it.
- No screenshots or detailed previews in the description, so you're flying blind on the look.
For Skyrim players who want a dramatic, artistic overhaul of cave environments and don't mind a niche aesthetic. If you're running Better Dungeons or Snu's Dungeons, this is a no-brainer to try. Skip if you prefer realistic or subtle texture changes—this is anything but vanilla.
💡 Beginner Tips
- If you use a mod manager like Vortex or MO2, install this as a separate mod and let it overwrite vanilla textures—no need to manually place files.
- Since it supports Better Dungeons and Snu's Dungeons, make sure those mods are installed before this one so the patches apply correctly.
- Check the mod's load order: textures usually don't need a specific spot, but if you have other cave retextures, put this one last to ensure it takes priority.
