During a period in medieval Japan, the samurai sword was banned. The samurai and ronin defied this edict and hid their cherished sword in what appeared to be a walking stick. A shirasaya literally \"white scabbard\",is a plain wooden Japanese blade mount consisting of a saya (scabbard) and tsuka (hilt).
