📋 About This Mod

Convenient Open Spells

Description:

Despite their utility, digging through the spellbook for an Open spell is a frustrating experience that spoils the gameplay flow.

I often find that it’s faster (or at least simply more engaging) to pick a Very Easy lock than it is to use the spell. For the sake of everyone’s time and sanity, this mod dynamically switches between your currently selected spell, and the best Open spell for any lock you look at—provided you have the appropriate spell in your spellbook.

All done in real-time. No immersion-breaking menus, no dopamine-inhibiting pauses.

How selection works:

The script chooses the cheapest spell that you meet the requirements for that can open the lock. Only spells are selected automatically.

Greater Powers and Scrolls must be selected as usual. Your manual selection will be prioritized by the script.

Looking away or unlocking the lock will switch back to your previously selected spell.

Potential Features:

Option to ignore certain spells, like Fenrick’s Welcome

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

This small utility mod for Skyrim automatically selects the cheapest viable Open spell when you look at a locked object, then switches back to your previous spell. It's a quality-of-life improvement for players who frequently use lockpicking magic. With 163 endorsements and 9,628 downloads, it has a modest but active user base.

✨ Key Features

Automatically selects the cheapest viable Open spell when looking at a locked object.
Switches back to your previously selected spell after unlocking.
Works with any Open spell that is viable for the lock level.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Streamlines lockpicking with magic—no more manually swapping spells.
  • Picks the cheapest spell, saving magicka over time.
  • Solid community trust with 163 endorsements and nearly 10k downloads.

⚠️ Cons

  • Last updated in July 2023—may not be compatible with the latest Skyrim updates or mods.
  • Only affects Open spells; if you use other unlock methods, this mod won't help.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim mages who rely on Open spells to bypass locks and want a smoother experience. If you prefer lockpicking minigame or use mods that alter lock mechanics, this might not be essential. Skip if you want more comprehensive magic overhauls—this is a focused QoL tweak.
