During the imprisonment of Uriel Septim VII in Oblivion by Jagar Tharn, in the year 3E 394, a Breton adventurer, Joseph Motierre, who had fallen on rough times made his way from High Rock, through Skyrim, down to Cheydinhal by way of hook and crook. Having almost exhausted his ill-gotten resources staying at the Newlands Lodge, he had learned that the creepy abandoned house in town was rumored to hide a lair of the reviled Dark Brotherhood.

Being an experienced highwayman and no slouch with regards to combat magic, he figured that the reputation of the home would serve to protect him from surprise visits, and even if the Dark Brotherhood were using the building, well, if he didn't see or hear anything and nobody had performed the Black Sacrament to forge a contract on his life, he'd probably be fine. So he began to case the building and, being unable to detect anyone who would regularly interfere with the building, nor noticing the ominous comings and goings of suspicious persons, that it was as safe as he could hope for a free home.

He claimed that he was off to Anvil, bade those acquaintances he had made farewell, and "set off" to the west of Cyrodiil. This of course was a ruse, and instead he renewed his habits as a highwayman robbing merchants and travelers along the Red Ring Road, rebuilding his nest-egg over time. His activities, however, did not go unnoticed by his... neighbors. This undiscussed arrangement lasted for several years, allowing Joseph to amass a not insignificant cushion, until the Staff of Chaos was reassembled and the Jewel of Fire affixed, and the True Emperor returned from the hellscape crafted by the Betrayer, Jagar Tharn.

He had felt the presence before he had heard anything, the unmistakable chill of being watched by a true predator. Sat in his chair he didn't look up from his cup, instead crossing one leg over the other and placing his forearm across the bootknife he was going to draw if necessary. He did not regret dosing on Skooma before opening the bottle now, but he still couldn't help but feel his body fighting his control.

"Hello Jose, or do you prefer Joseph?" the voice issued from the shadows that surrounded his little enclave of candle light.

"Jose is fine, I assume there is something I can do for you?" Joseph calmly replied, trying to act like he had been in situations like this many times before.

"Indeed, there is... It seems that your actions have drawn the attention of our dear Mother and she wishes to extend to you an offer. I do suggest that you indulge her." the voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere.
