📋 About This Mod
Generic NPC Namer
Generic NPC Namer is a framework for distributing real names to NPCs that don't have one. ESPLess, lightweight, extremely configurable, and compatible with everything!
Features:
-
[]You now learn a generic NPC's "real name" after talking to them at least once. []Names on most NPCs are not persistent, and will be randomized on each game session. This is an intentional decision, and helps to add to the illusion there are more people in the world. However, NPCs can be marked with the "UniqueNPC" KEYWORD, and their randomly generated name will persist throughout your save!
[]An NPC's name is determined either by a hardcoded preset, by their faction, or by a default list of generic names.
- [
[*]Easily expandable so the effect applies to mod-added NPCs (if any patching is even needed), or to add more names to the available pool of names. Names can be further customized directly through scripting, making it very easy to get the name in the format you want!
Installation:
During the install, you will be prompted to add some additional presets for specific NPCs. Most of these NPCs will always have their name randomly generated, however, these presets expand the available tool specifically for them! For example, adding the "Guards" preset will generate more "tough-sounding" names for generic guard NPCs.
For some of these presets, they enable random name generation for a specific faction. For example, if you do not install the "Brotherhood of Steel" preset, then members of the BoS will not have random names assigned. This is because I don't want Knights running around with names like "Bob Hayes" or something; instead, it should be "Knight Hayes" (better, right?).
Configuration:
After running the game with the mod once (you will have to actually load into the game) a configuration file is created. This configuration file allows you to enable/disable if the original name should be appended to the real name. For example: "Cory Trevor (Guard)".

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community-trusted with 91 endorsements and over 51k downloads
- ESPLess means no plugin slot usage, perfect for load order purists
- Framework approach lets other mods hook in for custom naming
⚠️ Cons
- Only 91 endorsements despite high downloads—maybe not enough feedback for a framework
- No detailed documentation provided, so you'll need to figure out integration yourself
- Last updated July 2025—could be outdated if Skyrim updates break things
For Skyrim players who hate seeing 'Bandit' or 'Forsworn' as names and want a bit more life in generic NPCs. Also for mod authors who want a lightweight naming framework to build on. Skip if you're fine with vanilla naming or want a full overhaul—this is a tool, not a content pack.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since it's ESPLess, just drop the files into your Data folder or use your mod manager—no plugin to activate.
- Check if your other mods already add names to NPCs; this might conflict if they use the same records.
- If you're a modder, look at the file structure to see how to hook your own naming logic into the framework.
