📋 About This Mod
Background
Weapon Sheathing by Greatness7 is used and loved by many MWSE and OpenMW users alike. Given the size of two-handed swords in Morrowind, coupled with the addition of sheaths for these massive blades, some mods like Weapon Sheathing - Two-Handed Long Blade Sheath Position Edit by profile011 and Hip-Sheathed Claymores by Kellborn move sheathed two-handed swords from the back to the hip, just like one-handed swords.
However, these two mods only work for the MWSE version of Weapon Sheathing, which left OpenMW users without a mod that does the same.
Frustrated by the lack of mods like these that worked for OpenMW, I downloaded and learned NifSkope myself to make an OpenMW compatible version.
This works not just for males and females, but Khajiit and Argonians, too!
Requirements
2. Weapon Sheathing1. 6-OpenMW
1. Drag and drop the Animations folder to Morrowind\Data Files
2. Overwrite. Do NOT keep the original files, even renamed, in the same folder. If you want a backup, move them elsewhere.
2a. If using a mod manager, load this mod's files after Weapon Sheathing's files.
3. In the OpenMW launcher, navigate to Advanced in the top menu bar. Then, under Visuals, make sure the following are toggled on:
-Use additional animation sources
-Weapon sheathing
-Shield sheathing
Greatness7 for his Weapon Sheathing mod and akortunov for his OpenMW implementation. Without this framework, we wouldn't be talking about sheath positions. I modified all three of their OpenMW sheathing-related NIF files to create this mod.
Kellborn for his Hip-Sheathed Claymores mod. In struggling to get his mod to work with OpenMW, I realized it isn't compatible. I modified an NiNode in his NIF file and stitched the result into those made by Greatness7 and akortunov.
This OpenMW mod moves sheathed two-handed swords from the back to the hip for a more grounded look. It's a simple drag-and-drop install with 32 endorsements and over 5,000 downloads, last updated in December 2023.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Tiny mod that does exactly what it says—no bloat, just hip-sheathed claymores
- Over 5,400 downloads show it's got a solid niche following
- Drag-and-drop install means you're in-game in under a minute
⚠️ Cons
- Only 32 endorsements—small community, so don't expect widespread support
- Requires the OpenMW version of Weapon Sheathing, so it's not for vanilla Morrowind
- Last updated in 2023—might not be tested with the latest OpenMW builds
For Morrowind players using OpenMW who want a more realistic sword carry position. If you're a purist who likes back-sheaths, skip it. This is purely cosmetic and adds no gameplay changes.
