📋 About This Mod

Note: This mod was released the day before the lynching of George Floyd by police officers, and was not intended as a poor-taste response to the reality of police brutality. Black Lives Matter, and ACAB.

The Law is Sacred

Version 1. 1. 3

====Requirements====

- Morrowind

- Bloodmoon

- MGE XE 0. 10. 1

- MWSE 2. 1+

This mod requires a recent nightly build of MWSE. Please be sure to run the mwse-update.exe before playing this mod.

====Description====

For a society with the saying "The Law is Sacred" on their coins, the Empire does not seem all that concerned about due-process. With this mod, the guards (Imperial and House) will only kill you under specific circumstances. Everyday criminals that resist arrest get knocked out and dragged to jail, with an extra sentence for making things difficult. Lethal measures are saved for vampires, werewolves, and (configurably) very high profile criminals.

Includes an ESP to modify the guard dialog to better fit their new non-lethal approach, but it is optional.

Adds compatibility for Arcimaestro Antares "Go To Jail" mod, at Danae's request. If your esp is named something other than "Go To Jail 3. 7.esp" or "Go To Jail 3. 7 - NOM.esp", make sure to change the goToJailModTitle entry in the config file. My eventual goal is to replace the functionality of this mod, but, for now, they are compatible.

Between when I first released this mod, and now, police brutality has once again come to the fore of international attention. While I briefly have your attention, allow to me to say: Black Lives Matter, ACAB, and Abolish the Police!

Fixed a coding error that was causing problems, and fixed compatibility with my other mod, Timely Escape. face palm

Actually fixed the coding error that spurred the last update. Hopefully.

Removed the use of an unwieldy MWSE function that is being changed by Null, replacing it with a leaner alternative. It is likely that previous versions will be incompatible with recent and upcoming MWSE builds.

===Configuration===

This mod uses the MCM functionality of MWSE to present several configuration options.

Show Message: Shows messages with information about incurring bounties added by this mod. Does not affect the confirmation message box, or the default jail message box.

Get Confirmation: After guards render you unconscious, asks if you want to be arrested, or die.

Animate Knockout: After the guards reduce them to zero health, the player character falls to the ground. You watch the player character stay on the ground for a few seconds while the guards keep beating on them.

Death Warrants: If set to true, guards will kill you instead of arresting you if your bounty is over the threshold

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

The Law is Sacred is a gameplay mod for Skyrim that overhauls crime enforcement, making guards knock out and jail resisting criminals instead of killing them. Lethal force is reserved for vampires, werewolves, and optionally high-profile criminals. With 92 endorsements and last updated in 2020, it offers a non-lethal alternative for players who prefer a more just approach.

✨ Key Features

Everyday criminals who resist arrest are knocked out and dragged to jail, with an extra sentence for making things difficult.
Lethal measures are saved for vampires, werewolves, and (configurably) very high profile criminals.
Configurable behavior for high-profile criminals.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Adds a fresh, non-lethal twist to Skyrim's crime system—guards actually knock you out instead of turning you into a pincushion.
  • Configurable high-profile criminal handling means you can tailor the mod to your preferred level of justice.
  • Decent community traction with 92 endorsements and over 5.6k downloads, so it's been tested by a fair number of players.

⚠️ Cons

  • Last updated in 2020—might be out of sync with the latest Skyrim updates or mods, so expect potential compatibility hiccups.
  • The mod's scope is narrow—it only changes arrest behavior, so if you're looking for a broader crime overhaul, this won't cover it.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim players who want a more merciful take on law enforcement, especially those who role-play as a good-aligned character and hate killing guards over a stolen sweetroll. Skip if you prefer the vanilla lethal chaos or want a comprehensive crime system overhaul.

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since the mod is from 2020, check if your Skyrim version is compatible—if you're on the latest Special Edition, you might need to use a compatibility patch or adjust load order.
  • Use a mod manager like Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 to install and manage the mod, making it easy to enable/disable if issues arise.
  • If you have other mods that alter guard behavior or crime systems, load The Law is Sacred after them to ensure its changes take priority.
