📋 About This Mod

Morrowind Watercolor Textures Tamriel Data (1. 0)

This is part of a series of mods to overhaul Morrowind's appearance to have a stylized painterly aesthetic. There are several full texture packs and then a Kuwahara based DOF shader that gives distant objects a painterly effect.

Morrowind Watercolor HD Upscale (Normals-Parallax-Shader) (Also includes a patch for Project Atlas)

PBR SSS Foliage Retexture (Vanilla - TD - Mods - Watercolor)

PBR SSS Heads (Vanilla - TD - MacKoms - and Watercolor Patches)

Analog Film Shaders for OpenMW

These packs require Tamriel Data and/or OAAB Data, and a mod that will actually implement the assets (eg: TR/SHOTN/PC, various OAAB Mods).

OAAB Data Link

The main files are a 2x-4x upscale of all of Tamriel Data HD in a watercolor style, with additional normal, height, and "PBR" maps that match a painterly style. The end result is roughly a 2x upscale relative to PTR textures, 4x was mostly used for older TR textures, or for large landscape textures. There are also optional "downscaled files" that should match the quality of the HD texture in Tamriel Data, upscaling lower res textures but not upscaling the higher res ones. For OAAB it is a straight 2x upscale from OAAB HD

Notes:

This was an absurd endeavor, that was highly dependent on a lot of batch scripting, automated upscaling, file copying/processing etc. It is inevitable I messed something up somewhere and missed a texture, turned it so "painterly" that it's impossible to tell what it's meant to be, or ruined the tiling. If you run into an issue with a texture, a report of where I can find it, what's wrong, and ideally the actual texture name (which can be found by clicking on a mesh in console and typing ori, or using Vurt's MWSE texture finding tool) will help me quickly fix it and upload a patch. I've separated out the main texture packs so I can better keep track of them and any feedback I get specific to that texture pack.

I will also happily take into account requests for other mods/resources that you want upscaled in this style, and am going to continue trying to improve my pipeline for creature/head/body textures that seem to struggle more. However, if you don't feel like waiting I've included a .json file for the ComfyUI setup I used for upscaling, as well as custom nodes I made to be able to calculate AO from height efficiently using Blender. It will require a bit of work downloading all the models etc as some aren't auto-downloadable, but it should let you easily generate custom watercolor textures, or if you alter the settings, upscale textures with a realistic appearance and generate normal and parallax maps. I will eventually make robust documentation and share the workflow as a separate mod if it seems to overwhelming at the moment.

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

This mod upscales every texture in OAAB and Tamriel Data to 2x-4x resolution in a watercolor style, with optional normal/parallax maps for OpenMW and WIP PBR support. It's a niche visual overhaul for Morrowind modders using these data packs, with 17 endorsements and 1,018 downloads.

✨ Key Features

Upscales all textures from OAAB and Tamriel Data to 2x-4x resolution
Applies a watercolor art style to the upscaled textures
Includes optional normal and parallax maps for OpenMW
Offers WIP PBR support for future use

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Covers every texture in OAAB and Tamriel Data, so you get a consistent visual overhaul
  • Optional normal/parallax maps add depth without breaking OpenMW compatibility
  • Watercolor style gives Morrowind a unique, hand-painted look that stands out from vanilla

⚠️ Cons

  • Low endorsement count (17) suggests it's not widely tested or community-vetted
  • PBR support is WIP, so expect incomplete or experimental features
  • Watercolor style is a specific aesthetic that won't appeal to everyone—it's a big departure from vanilla
🎯 Is This For You?
For Morrowind modders who use OAAB or Tamriel Data and want a cohesive, artistic texture overhaul. If you're into OpenMW and like experimenting with parallax or PBR, this is a solid pick. Skip if you prefer lore-friendly or realistic textures—this is a stylized look.
📦 Install:Medium· 5-10 minutes

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Make sure you have OAAB and Tamriel Data installed first, as this mod replaces their textures.
  • If you're using OpenMW, enable the normal/parallax maps in your settings for the full effect.
  • Back up your original texture folders before overwriting, so you can revert if the watercolor style isn't for you.
