📋 About This Mod
Static Switching System is designed to be a simple option for mod creators who want to create assets replacers without the hassle of manually switching instances in the Construction Set, dealing with patch hell, or load order issues.
For players, simply install SSS and whatever associated module, such as Melchior Dahrk's White Suran 2.
Using the script settings menu provided by SSS, any module added by it can also be uninstalled while in-game. Select a module and hit the "Disable" button below the module selector. When you do this, any replacements made by that module will be removed, the originals restored, and your game will immediately save and exit. At this time, go remove whatever relevant mod files, and voila! Uninstallable mods.
Before starting a game with SSS installed, please make sure to check it's script settings menu. There is a VERY important setting here, which in English, is labelled "Enable Global Functions". By default this setting is disabled to avoid early save bloat. However, this comes at the cost of distant land not being displayed properly until you visit the cell in question. For example, if this is disabled, Suran will not be white in the distance, until you actually visit it and the objects are replaced.
For mod creators, you must create a yaml file which expresses which meshes will be replaced, and the cells in which replacements will be made.
Your yaml file should be in a folder, `scripts/meshReplacer/data`. It may have four fields:
log_name: a string (text) which will be displayed when logging messages related to your module. If your module is not installed properly or contains references to missing assets, this is how you will know it was your fault.
replace_names: an array of cell names in which objects will be replaced. This does not have to be the full name, eg "Suran" will replace objects in all cells with "Suran" in the name.
ignore_records: an array of record Ids which will be ignored during replacement. Use this to filter out scripted objects ( see below for details )
exterior_cells: an array of exterior grids to replace. Each consists of an x and y field. For example:
exterior_cells:
replace_meshes: a map of old meshes to new ones. Objects are replaced on a per-mesh basis, not by id. This ensures that any mods which use the original asset are also replaced by SSS. For example:
replace_meshes:
totallyFake1.nif: some_real/file1.nif
totallyFake2.nif: some_real/file2.nif
If you're still not sure how to use SSS to make your own mods, check the EXAMPLE.yaml it comes with.
Finally, keep in mind that when replacing objects with SSS, their record IDs will change. This means that scripts which reference them externally WILL NOT WOR
Static Switching System is an OpenMW-Lua framework that lets modders create pluginless mesh replacers, eliminating load order and patch conflicts. It's a niche tool for OpenMW players who want to customize meshes without traditional mod management. With 148 endorsements and 34,041 downloads, it has a dedicated following.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Solid community trust (148 endorsements, 34k downloads)
- Solves real pain point: no more load order conflicts for mesh replacers
- Actively maintained (last updated August 2025)
⚠️ Cons
- Requires OpenMW and Lua knowledge to use effectively
- Not for casual players—this is a modder's tool, not a plug-and-play mod
- Limited to OpenMW, so Morrowind players on original engine miss out
For OpenMW modders who want to create mesh replacers without the headache of load order or patches. If you're a player looking for ready-made replacers, this isn't for you—it's a framework to build with. Skip if you're not comfortable with Lua scripting.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Make sure you're running OpenMW, not the original Morrowind engine—this mod won't work otherwise.
- Check the OpenMW Lua documentation to understand how to write scripts for this framework.
- Start with a simple mesh replacer example to learn the syntax before tackling complex projects.
