📋 About This Mod
Key Feature:
This mod changes how much XP you gain when casting a spell based on how it was implemented on Oblivion Remasted
XP based on magicka cost
Instead of gaining 1 XP point per cast of spell (incentivating spam casting of low cost spell) this mod implements the same formula used in Oblivion Remaster.
This fits greatly with the mage gameplay of wanting to use more powerful spell instead of spamming low magnitude spell to level more. This mod fixes the need to afk train using 1 magicka cost spell in front of a bed to reach higher level, as you will level more quickly and naturally by simply using powerful spell while adventuring.
The formula is the following:
( ( SpellBaseCost ExpCastMult ) / 0. 75 ) + ( UseValue / 1. 5 )
-
[]SpellBaseCost is the base magicka cost of the spell
[]ExpCastMult is always 0. 1
[]UseValue technically varies from 6. 0 to 0. 6 based on the school (conjuration being 6. 0 and restoration 0. 6), I used an average value of 3 to avoid unbalance between the schools
Installation and Requirements
Requires OpenMW 0. 49 or better. Files should be dropped in the Data folder and then enabled in the OpenMW Launcher. It does not require a fresh save.
Uninstalling
Just remove the files or uncheck them from the launcher. You can uninstall without any problem from any save at any stage of the game.
Compatibility
As this mod is just a script that gets triggered when a spell is casted there should be no compatibility issue, unless some other mod would change how magick XP is handled.
Magic XP now scales using the same formula as Oblivion Remastered, rewarding players for casting more expensive spells. This encourages using powerful magic instead of spamming cheap spells. A small mod with 23 endorsements, last updated October 2025.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Encourages strategic spell use instead of mindless spamming.
- Tight integration with OpenMW, no extra dependencies.
- Fresh update (October 2025) means it's likely compatible with current OpenMW.
⚠️ Cons
- Small userbase (23 endorsements) — not widely tested.
- Only affects magic XP — if you're not a mage, this mod does nothing for you.
For OpenMW players who want a more rewarding magic progression system. If you're tired of grinding cheap spells to level up, this mod adds depth. Skip if you prefer vanilla XP or don't play magic-focused characters.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Make sure you're using OpenMW, not the original Morrowind engine — this mod is built for OpenMW.
- Test with a high-cost spell to see the XP gain difference immediately.
- If you use other magic overhauls, check for conflicts — this mod changes XP scaling directly.
