📋 About This Mod

A full creature bestiary for OpenMW with 98 entries, encounter-based discovery, unlockable lore and combat information, creature portraits, categories, kill tracking, and its own configurable Morrowind-style menu.

Jim's Living Bestiary

A proper creature bestiary for OpenMW.

Jim's Living Bestiary keeps track of the creatures and unusual beings you encounter while exploring Morrowind. Entries begin hidden, reveal themselves when you find the creature, and gain additional combat information once you have actually dealt with it.

The idea is pretty simple: instead of already knowing everything about every creature in the game, the Bestiary fills out as you play.

Inspired by the creature journal style of Skyrim's The Dragonborn's Bestiary, but built around Morrowind and OpenMW.

How It Works

When you first open the Bestiary, most creatures are listed as unknown.

Encountering one unlocks its entry, including:

  • []Name [/]

    []Creature portrait [/]

    []Category [/]

    []Description [/]

    []Lore [/]

    []Habitat [/]

Defeating the creature completes the combat portion of the entry and reveals things such as:

  • []Health [/]

    []Attacks [/]

    []Soul information [/]

    []Abilities [/]

    []Resistances [/]

    []Weaknesses [/]

    []Loot [/]

Creatures that are normally peaceful do not require you to kill them just to finish their entry.

The Bestiary also keeps track of how many times you have encountered and killed each creature.

Content

Version 1. 0 contains 98 entries covering creatures and special encounters from:

  • []Morrowind [/]

    []Tribunal [/]

    []Bloodmoon [/]

The Bestiary is divided into:

  • []Beasts [/]

    []Kwama [/]

    []Ash Creatures [/]

    []Daedra [/]

    []Undead [/]

    []Dwemer Animunculi [/]

    []Goblins and Durzogs [/]

    []Special Creatures [/]

Along with normal creature types, some notable named and unique encounters have their own entries.

Creature Portraits

Every current entry has its own portrait.

I wanted this to look like an actual Morrowind bestiary rather than filling it with generated art, so the portraits use images of the creatures from the game.

Undiscovered entries remain hidden until you actually encounter them.

Interface

The Bestiary uses its own full-screen OpenMW menu with:

  • []Mouse navigation [/]

    []Category tabs [/]

    []Scrollable creature lists [/]

    []Large creature portraits [/]

    []Lore and habitat notes [/]

    []Combat information [/]

    []Encounter and kill counters [/]

The layout is designed for 16:9 resolutions and works in both fullscreen and windowed OpenMW.

Settings

The mod has its own page under:

Options > Scripts > Jim's Living Bestiary

You can adjust:

[]Open key [/]
