📋 About This Mod
Gent's Vanilla Spell Rebalance
by SandGentleman
Description
Many spell effects in Morrowind are unusable due to high magicka costs. Even weak effects like Sound or Burden cost huge sums of magicka. The opposite is also true - strong effects like Paralyze and Absorb Health are too cheap. This mod balances the magic effect costs to match the power of their effect so that all spell effects are viable. This mod does 3 things:
1.) Fixes default magic effect costs.
A 150 point Burden spell lasting 30 seconds (for context, this wouldn't even over-encumber a low-level bandit) used to cost 225 magicka! Now it costs only 23 magicka - much fairer. See more examples below:
Reflect
Reflect 50% for 30s on Self
Spell Cost: 775 magicka ➝ 68 magicka
Reflect cost so much that you couldn't use a duration above 10s or magnitudes above 10%. Now mid-level characters can utilize it.
Disintegrate Weapon
Disintegrate Weapon 100 pts on Touch
Spell Cost: 30 magicka ➝ 5 magicka
Maybe the weakest Destruction effect. Low-level weapons tend to have 700+ durability. 100 Disintegrate is almost useless... for 30 magicka!
Feather
Feather 100 pts for 120s on Self
Spell Cost: 605 magicka ➝ 48 magicka
Feather is mainly a utility effect. Previously, it was unusable and could only be properly utilized as an enchantment. Now it's viable.
Sound
Sound 50 pts for 30s on Touch
Spell Cost: 232 magicka ➝ 20 magicka
Maybe the weakest Illusion effect. Even 100 Sound doesn't fully stop enemies from casting spells. 20 magicka still might be too expensive...
Resist Magicka
Resist Magicka 50 pts for 30s on Self
Spell Cost: 155 magicka ➝ 38 magicka
Resist Magicka does not protect against fire/frost/shock damage, only other spell effects. It's been changed from unviable to mid expensive.
Summon Winged Twilight
Summon Winged Twilight for 30s on Self
Spell Cost: 80 magicka ➝ 48 magicka
Twilights are comparable to Dremora in power, so 80 magicka was exorbitant compared to a Dremora's cost of 42. 48 is much better.

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Targets a real problem—useless spells—and makes them worth casting
- Recent update (July 2026) shows active maintenance
- Solid download count (8,998) for a niche magic overhaul
⚠️ Cons
- Low endorsement count (68) relative to downloads—might not be widely tested
- No detailed patch notes or compatibility info provided
- May conflict with other magic overhauls—check your load order
For Skyrim players who love magic but hate that half the spell list is garbage. If you're tired of ignoring Destruction spells like Frost Rune or Illusion's Calm, this mod gives them a reason to exist. Skip if you prefer gameplay overhauls that add new spells—this only tweaks existing ones.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since it changes spell costs and effects, load it after other magic mods to ensure its changes take priority.
- Start a new character to see the starting spell changes—existing saves might not get the new starting loadout.
- Check the mod page for any compatibility patches if you use popular magic overhauls like Ordinator or Apocalypse.
