📋 About This Mod
About a year and a half ago I made a mod that gave the infected the ability to 'hear' gunshots. Since then, I've experimented a lot with that mechanic; as is the case with most of my mods, they work, but can always be improved. This mod is a remake of the original concept, with the addition of a few new mechanics and some reworked script logic. This script allows the infected to 'hear' the survivors when they make noise. Survivors can make noise in a few different ways: - Firing their weapons - Opening and closing doors - Turning their flashlights on (technically the infected will 'see' the light, but it has the same effect as noise) When a survivor makes noise, all infected in a small radius will rush to attack them. Any additional noise will increase the size of the attraction radius, and if the survivor stops making noise then the attraction radius will decrease. If the infected are within range of multiple survivors who are making noise, they will target whoever is louder. How does it work To create this effect, the script uses a system called the Noise Order Ranking Algorithm, or NORA. Any noise the survivors make will be tracked by NORA for several seconds before being discarded. This gives every survivor a recent "total noise" value, which NORA uses to make the infected rush the survivors. Once per second, NORA will calculate how loud each survivor is by adding together all their recent noise values, rank them from quietest to loudest, and then activate a rush in that order. This gives loud survivors priority over quiet ones; if the infected can hear more than one survivor, they will rush whoever made the most noise recently. It might sound like a simple change, but it gives some big benefits compared to the original script: - Every gunshot has an impact, rather than only the first shot you fire. The 'rush' effect isn't only relevant at the start of a fight - The attraction range of every weapon changes based on how often you attack with it, rather than being
