📦 Install Methods
1. Vortex mod manager (easiest)
- Install and launch GTA V once through your launcher (Steam, Epic, or Rockstar) so the game creates its full folder structure.
- Download and install Vortex from nexusmods.com, open it, and let the GTA V game extension install automatically.
- In Vortex's Games tab, select GTA V and set the Game Path to your Grand Theft Auto V folder (Steam default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V).
- Download a zip-based mod (from Nexus Mods or gta5-mods.com) and drag it onto Vortex's 'Drop File(s) Here' zone, or use Install from File.
- Click Deploy so Vortex writes the mod's files into the game folder, and read any warnings about files it could not write.
- If the mod is a script mod, also install Script Hook V (via Vortex or by extracting it manually) so the dinput8.dll ASI loader exists.
- Launch the game normally and test the mod in Story Mode.
2. Manual install with Script Hook V (standard for script mods)
- Download the latest Script Hook V from Alexander Blade's site or its Nexus Mods page — the version must match your current game build.
- Extract ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll from the Script Hook V zip straight into the Grand Theft Auto V root folder, the same folder that holds GTA5.exe. dinput8.dll is the ASI loader every .asi mod needs.
- Copy the mod's .asi file (for example Simple Trainer or Menyoo) into that same root folder.
- For Script Hook V .NET mods, copy the .dll into the scripts folder inside the game directory, creating it if it doesn't exist.
- Leave the mod's .ini or config file next to the .asi so the mod can create and save its settings on first run.
- Launch the game and press the mod's default hotkey (Native Trainer opens with F4) to confirm it loaded.
- Keep mods in Story Mode only — remove Script Hook V and the .asi files before playing GTA Online.
3. OpenIV (advanced: .oiv packages and the mods folder)
- Download OpenIV from openiv.com, install it, and run it as administrator.
- Let OpenIV detect your GTA V install, and in its game settings enable the ASI Manager if you plan to run ASI mods.
- For mods that ship as .oiv packages, use Tools > Package Installer, select the .oiv file, and let OpenIV apply it automatically.
- For manual archive mods (cars, weapons, textures), switch to Edit Mode and accept OpenIV's offer to create a mods folder — this copies the original .rpf archives so you never modify real game files.
- Inside the mods folder, navigate to the file the mod replaces (for example a vehicle's .yft and .ytd inside x64e.rpf) and replace it with the mod's version.
- Launch the game through OpenIV's green play button so your mods-folder edits are actually loaded.
- Test in Story Mode; if the game crashes, delete the file you changed or re-verify so the mods-folder copy restores the original.
📦 Mod Managers
Most GTA V mods install through Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 — they handle file placement and load order automatically. Manual install means dropping files into your game's mod/data folder.
