The tools

GTA 5 modding runs on Script Hook V, OpenIV, and RagePluginHook — mature tools refined over a decade. GTA 6 needs its own Script Hook VI and an updated OpenVI, which arrive after the PC release.

The timeline

GTA 5's PC release in 2015 unlocked its mod scene, which has been growing ever since. GTA 6 launches on console November 2026 with PC expected later, so its mod scene realistically starts in 2027.

The content

GTA 5 has thousands of cars, scripts, graphics overhauls, and total conversions. GTA 6 starts from zero and builds up over years. If you want to mod today, GTA 5 is the only choice.
