📋 About This Mod
Adds 600+ animal names to the random generation pool, mostly based on real names of medieval pets and domesticated animals, as well as names from medieval folklore, myths and legends, fables, and religions.
Background story
One day, my goat Jade beget two children. One of them was assigned the name Jade. Not too long after, another goat friend of hers beget a child too. Also a Jade. What?!
This prompted me to look at the source code to find out how few names were available in the randomly generated pools.
I then took it upon myself to expand it.
Overview
This mod adds 300+ names for each gender (total 600+). The names are hand-picked based on my own readings on books and articles on medieval animal names. My primary reference is Kathleen Walker-Meikle's book Medieval Pets. And plenty of Wikipedia pages. See the discussion section on Steam Workshop for additional sources.
The names are classified into four categories:
-
[]Inspired by actual names used for pets and domesticated animals in the medieval period. There are four subcategories here:
[
]Playful or mocking names. E.g. Brayneles, Goodynowze, Joyepaw, Olddehag, etc.[/][
]Reflecting traits or roles . E.g. Crooktail, Nosewise, Fynder, Perfume, etc.[/][
]Food-based names (including fruits and vegetables). E.g. Halibutte, Salmon, Garlik, Cinnamon, etc.[/][
]Evoking ideals or archetypes. E.g. Peregrine, Persyvale, Madonna, Brina, etc.[/][
]People's names or their shorthands used for pet names. E.g. Gyb, Nan, Jenette, Isolde, etc.[/]
[]Legendary animals, folklore, and religious tradition known in medieval times. E.g. Albacara, Caladrius, Llamrei, Qitmir.[/]
[]Animals owned by famous historical figures such as Alexander the Great. E.g., Bucephalus, Incitatus, Yafour, Damun.[/]
[]Nordic-Germanic-Roman influences, styled after the vanilla name pool. E.g. Absolom, Achilles, Hollita, Valeria, etc.[/]
[]Pop culture names that still more-or-less fit the medieval setting, also styled after the vanilla name pool. E.g. Lassie, Donovan, Leknaat, Furina, etc.[/]
And one shamelessly borrowed idea from scruffynerfherdertk421 on the official Discord: Lady Clucksalot.
