📋 About This Mod
This mod will replace both the bodies and faces of player characters with pixel art textures, as opposed to textures that happen to be pixelated. It still uses daggerfall's art palette, but with less tones, clearer shapes, and less noise.
A while ago now, I published my fixed paperdoll textures, and while It was rendered pretty much obsolete by WilhelmBlack's excellent work, I feel like my hacky solution did help a few people.
However, While the mod could make the colors more consistent, it couldn't fix the heart of the problem with Daggerfall's graphics : they're pixelated, but were never meant to be pixel art. They were never even meant for modern screens.
As a result, they are noisy with strange details, splotches of random color and single pixels without purpose, things that look like compression artifacts...
And so, my proposed solution to some of this is a pixel art version of the basic paperdoll textures, with a more restrained palette (that is still in daggerfall's art palette), that shouldn't look too out of place with the vanilla stuff but should look better.
At the moment, it covers bretons and redguards, but it should gradually expand to cover the rest of the playable races.
Expect progress to be slow since it's handmade textures, but this game and the community improving upon it deserve nothing less.
Vampiric options textures are included by default, and I went with a very subtle look, most just have red eyes. Conversely, it does not touch vanilla vampires, but you may use the vampiric options faces as defaults if you rename them. I didn't because I can't tell which face is for which race.
You may use the assets in this mod however you wish : modify them, mix and match, upload your modifications with or without credit, whatever. Though if you could refrain from using those for anything AI related, I would prefer it.
Compatibility :
These are PNG files and will therefore override any other textures you might have in .dfmod format.
uses the same texture sizes as vanilla, and the bodies keep to the same silouhette, so it's compatible with anything that doesn't actively use a body that changes the silouhette.
Also, if you use mods that have XML files attached to the same textures in that folder, such as loose files from "Paperdoll Enhanced", get rid of the ones affecting the textures you just put in, you will not need them and they might break stuff.
How it was made :
- with a lot of tea
- Heads were made in Libresprite (a FOSS version of Aseprite, they're like 99% the same)
- Bodies were passed through a color ramp filter in Krita, then touched up in libresprite
- No AI was ever used
