The seizure came only days after Russian gunboats and aircraft opened fire on unarmed Norwegian fishery support vessels in the Russian Exclusive Economic Zone. Many countries have expressed worry about the escalation of the ongoing conflict between Norway and Russia over marine resources in the Norwegian and Barents Seas. The Liberian-flagged oil tanker 'Moscow University' was boarded Wednesday morning off Tromso, in an attempt to avoid and oil spill of disasterous proportions, said the Norwegian government spokesperson. 'The long-term effects of acute oil spills in the Norwegian Sea are extremely serious, not only because this area is home to the world's largest cod and herring stocks, but because of the central role of zooplankton in the ecosystem.
