📋 About This Mod
Update: Confirmed working for 1. 0!
Ever get bothered by the cartoony-looking head "pop" that happens when you decapitate someone? Well, look no further! This mod reduces the amount of force that a head is "ejected" with when separated from the body.
This modifies player ragdoll data in the creature data for human males and females. It only affects the head, as the limbs seem fine to me.
It does NOT make dismemberment any easier than normal! You can use another mod like Simple Dismemberment along with this mod.
This includes Nonfatal Dismemberments, which can be toggled on or off. This means that NPCs can survive a hand, arm, or foot dismemberment. Decapitation (head) and full leg dismemberment will still always kill. It looks a bit weird if they're missing a leg and still walking around upright.
Configuration
You can enable or disable Better Decaps separately from Nonfatal Dismemberments. To do this, follow these steps:
-
[]In the game, open the config book.
[
]Click "Mods" on the left side.[]Select the "Better Decaps" mod.
[]To enable reduced head pop, set "Better Decaps" to Enabled. To use the vanilla setting, set it to Disabled.
[]To enable nonfatal dismemberments for hands, arms and feet, set "Nonfatal Dismemberments" to Enabled. To make them fatal, set it to Disabled.
Source Code
Better Decaps and Nonfatal Dismemberments 2. 0 is now a script (.dll) mod! Source code is available at GitHub: https://github.com/O-Deka-K/BetterDecaps
Compatibility (1. 0)
-
[]Compatible with anything that doesn't modify Creature_HumanMale.json or Creature_HumanFemale.json. Mods that do affect these files may still be compatible, depending on what values were touched.
[]Better Decaps is compatible with Sliceable Torso.
[]Nonfatal Dismemberments is partially compatible with Sliceable Torso. Edit configuration.json for Sliceable Torso with a text editor and set killOnTorsoDecap to false. However, this option will cause NPCs to sometimes survive a torso dismemberment. I can't fix it on my end.
[]Not compatible with Survivable Dismemberment 1. 0. Use the Nonfatal Dismemberment option instead.
Compatibility (U12. 3)
-
[]Compatible with anything that doesn't modify Creature_HumanMale.json or Creature_HumanFemale.json. Mods that do affect these files may still be compatible, depending on what values were touched.
[]Survivable Dismemberment (mod.io) is not needed if using the Better Decaps with Nonfatal Dismemberments.
Compatibility (U11. 3)
-
[]Compatible with anything that doesn't modify Creature_HumanMale.json or Creature_HumanFemale.json. Mods that do affect these files may still be compatible, depending on what values were touched.
[]Compatible with Non-snapping limbs (when using Nonfatal Dismemberments). Highly recommended!
[]Compatible with Simple Dismemberment (U11. 3) by me. NOT required for Better Decaps to work.
Compatibility (U10. 2)
[]Compatible with anything that doesn't modify Creature_HumanMale.json or Creature_HumanFemale.json. Mods that do affect these files may still be compatible, depending on what values were touched.
[]Compatible with Simple Dismemberment (U10) by me. NOT required for Better Decaps to work.

Better Decaps and Nonfatal Dismemberments is a gameplay mod that reduces the force of head ejection during decapitation and optionally allows NPCs to survive hand, arm, or foot dismemberment. It modifies player ragdoll data for human males and females, with configurable options via the in-game config book.
✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- High download count of 229,812 indicates strong community interest.
- 2,663 endorsements show positive reception from users.
- Actively maintained, with a recent update confirming compatibility for version 1.0.
⚠️ Cons
- Incompatible with mods that modify Creature_HumanMale.json or Creature_HumanFemale.json, potentially limiting compatibility.
- Options only take effect on newly spawned NPCs, not existing ones.
- Nonfatal dismemberment may look odd if NPCs are missing a leg and walking upright.
This mod is for players who find the default decapitation effect too exaggerated and want a more realistic or less cartoony experience. It also appeals to those who enjoy more detailed dismemberment mechanics, allowing NPCs to survive certain injuries. Players who use mods that alter human creature data may need to check compatibility before installing.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Use the in-game config book to adjust settings; changes apply to newly spawned NPCs only.
- Pair with Simple Dismemberment mod if you want easier dismemberment, as this mod does not alter difficulty.
- Check compatibility with other mods that modify human creature files to avoid conflicts.
