F-14B -NICKEL 123-

F-14B flown by USN VF-211 "Fighting Checkmates", Bureau Number 163227. For Lanzerince's F-14B add-on, skin slots 7 and 8.

This skin depicts "NICKEL 123" / BuNo 163227, a Block 150 F-14B/F-14A+ used by VF-211 "Fighting Checkmates", a Pacific-based US Naval squadron. VF-211 was one of the first squadrons to field the F-14B, originally designated “F-14A+”. The B model featured more powerful GE F110-GE-400 turbofan engines, especially compared to the F-14A’s aging (and debatably ill-suited) P&W TF30-P-414As. The livery reflects VF-211's typical style circa 1989.

This bird is somewhat unique because VF-211 only used the F-14B briefly. They had to revert back to the F-14A, as their F-14Bs were to be distributed to the Atlantic-based squadrons.

Details include what look to be an additional color tone for the front of the air intakes and vertical stabilizers as seen in the reference photos. I also removed the panel lines for the wing glove vanes seen in Lanzerince's original F-14B mod; this appears to have been one of the airframes that were new-built without glove vanes instead of an upgrade (that would have still had them, albeit welded shut). Names don't seem to have been stenciled on the canopy rails.

This takes up skin slots 7 or 8 for the F-14B.
