If you are not sure about which sound is removed, the wav file can be downloaded from Miscellaneous Files.
Installation
Copy the directory 'map_sound_loop_mute' in X4\extensions (where the DLCs are placed, not in ...\Documents\Egosoft\X4\extensions (I've read)).
Uninstallation
Delete the directory 'map_sound_loop_mute'.
Doesn't affect savegames.
If you want to mod this game to your liking, you need an extractor for the .cat/dat files:
