From March 1917 to November 1921, the Ukrainian War of Independence was fought in Ukraine, which was part of the Russian Civil War. Some events of that period: At the end of April 1918, the military carried out a coup in Kiev and elected Hetman Pavel Skoropadsky as the new leader of the country. He announced the creation of an independent Ukraine, while the previous Ukrainian government and the Central Rada were dispersed. In December 1918, Kiev was captured by the troops of Semyon Petliura, a Ukrainian revolutionary nationalist. He established a new government in Ukraine, which he called the Directory. In 1919, the Ukrainian People's Republic of Soviets was transformed into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which entered into an alliance with Soviet Russia. By the autumn of 1919, Petliura's troops had been defeated by the Red Army. In the spring of 1920, the Polish army launched an offensive against Ukraine. Petliura concluded a peace agreement with the Poles, according to which Poland recognized the independence of Ukraine in exchange for Galicia and Volhynia. On June 11, 1920, Soviet troops retook Kiev, and in August they almost reached Lviv, but were defeated. According to the preliminary peace treaty signed by the RSFSR and Poland in Riga on October 12, 1920, Western Ukraine remained with Poland
