Darktide Arbites Portrait Pack - plus Instructions

I didn't like that, for the Male Arbites there's only one portrait with the helmet on, and the guy has a beard. Well, I don't have a beard so IMMERSION BROKEN! jk but anyway, I like my Arbites Character in Darktide so I used a screenshot of him, ran it through ChatGPT with prompts to make it look close to the in-game portraits and had fun with that instead.

After playing for a while I really enjoyed it so I decided to share it here, and also provide instructions so you can do the same for your own Darktide characters if you want / or out of any character, really.

In this description, I'll be explaining:

1. How to install/use one or more of these portraits

2. Instructions on how I did this so you can generate your own portrait out of your own Darktide character.

Installation - Just using this portrait:

When creating a new character, or editing the appearance of your existing one (you can do so at the mirror in your bedroom, in the Voidship)

Select Portait > Custom Portrait > Click the plus (+) sign

Click the Open Portraits Folder button

It should take you to the exact folder where you can paste the PNG files from the downloaded zip of this mod. In the zip file provided there's a preview image of which portrait is in which folder so you can just copy and paste the specific portrait files you like. Just extract/copy and paste the files onto the numbered folder, overwrite the files. (Should be the Fulllength, Medium, and Small . PNG files)

Click the refresh button in game. You might have to restart the game to see the changes if you have to, but you should be able to use the new portrait for your character.

How to generate your own portrait

First off I have to mention this but I'll be quick - this is obviously for personal use only. Don't be an asshole to artists!

You KNOW that running prompts in an image generator doesn't put you above skilled and talented artists that practiced and learned the craft, and you can cope all you want but there is literally no AI generated picture that has looked any better than what any intermediate artist/illustrator can whip out in 30 minutes or an hour.

Alright? Okay onto the instructions -

Using ChatGPT, I just pasted a screenshot of just my Darktide character, and gave this prompt:

change the background to an imperial hive city landscape, small brush-strokes hand painted portrait style, no sepia, hyper-realistic colors, deep blacks and bright whites and glows

UPDATE:

I must have mixed something up or something because upon checking I couldn't replicate the first image's style. I don't know if it's related to me buying the subscription for ChatGPT or what, but I found a better prompt though. Try this instead:

change the background to an imperial hive city landscape, hand painted portrait style, no sepia, hyper-realistic colors, deep blacks and bright whites and glows. Realistic white foreground light

This prompt is what I used for the other 4 portraits in the pack.

Obviously you can tweak the prompts as you wish, but ChatGPT has a habit of making pictures in general have a sepia tone so if you don't like that, just specify that you don't want it. But then again in my experience, it'll just fill the image with blue tones. Of course after generating a picture you're happy with just edit it to have the exact dimensions as stated in the game and paste it on the custom portait folder.

Note that without paying for a subscription, ChatGPT limits daily image requests to 5(?) per day. So if you don't want to pay, just wait until tomorrow after you requested 5 pics.

Personally I paid for it - I honestly don't know if there's another AI image generator out there that lets you paste and edit images like this and actually still give an accurate and good looking generated picture. Aside from the one time making/testing pics for this mod, I honestly don't generate a lot of images anyway so the subscription is probably not worth it but at least it's relatively cheap.

Short of becoming / getting an actual artist, this is probably the best I can get for my personal needs.
