The asteroid that may hit the Moon in 2032 2024 YR4

2032 Lunar Impact Simulation – Asteroid 2024 YR4 Object Name: 2024 YR4 Type: Stony Near-Earth Asteroid Estimated Diameter: 50–60 meters Impact Velocity: ~18 km/s Target: The Moon Estimated Impact Date: December 22, 2032 (low probability scenario) Scenario Description In this simulation, asteroid 2024 YR4 impacts the near side of the Moon at extremely high velocity. Although relatively small compared to major extinction-level objects, the asteroid carries enormous kinetic energy due to its speed. At ~18 kilometers per second, the impact releases energy comparable to multiple nuclear explosions (without radiation). What Happens During Impact A bright flash would be visible from Earth if the impact occurs on the Moon’s near side. Surface rock at the impact site would instantly vaporize and melt. A crater approximately 1 kilometer wide would form. Lunar dust and debris would be ejected into space. Some ejecta may briefly orbit the Moon before falling back. Effects on Earth No danger to Earth. Any small debris reaching Earth would burn up in the atmosphere. The Moon’s orbit and structure remain unchanged. Visual Outcome A new small crater forms. Temporary expanding ejecta plume. Possible visible flash observable with telescopes from Earth.
