[2026.1] Skipper is Dead

Your commanding officer takes a fatal hit. The career doesn't end - but the moment you dock and try to talk to the Chief of Operations, the screen fades to a top-down view of an empty flotilla base... and freezes. Sound familiar? Players have been hitting this since Early Access in 2019. The bug When your skipper dies and you haven't promoted a successor, your boat has no skipper - and the game somehow never expected that. Every port interaction runs through the skipper, so with the seat empty: Talking to the Chief of Operations, Personnel Officer, Supply Officer or Flotilla Commander throws a null-reference error and locks you in the flotilla view. The driver's "Where shall we head?" freezes on a cinematic you can only escape with ESC. The game gives you no warning and no prompt to appoint a new commander. It has been reported for seven years and is still in the release. What this mod does No more softlock. With no skipper, the officer buttons grey out and the driver/officer conversations simply aren't offered - the exact guard the game already applies to its own dialogue button, extended to the paths it forgot. It tells you why. Hover a disabled officer and you get a clear hint: "You can't do this without a skipper. Select one of your officers and promote him to a skipper on the character screen." - in every one of the game's 14 languages, using its own wording. It heals itself. Promote any officer to captain (Crew > Promote) and everything springs back - buttons, dialogues, the driver. The mod goes completely inert the instant a skipper exists again. Compatibility Nothing is written to your save. Safe to add or remove mid-career - even on an already-broken save. You can even fix your save and disable the mod.
