Features and Information Introduced: 1968 Production ends: 1976 Top Speed: 134 Power Output: 2,240 kW Two paint schemes are included: Penn Central w/ White Logo Penn Central w/ White and Red Logo The EMD SD40 was an earlier iteration of the much more popular SD40-2, and was one of the last diesel locomotives ever purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad before their merger with the New York Central Railroad and the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. They owned a total of 65 prior to the merger, all of which were repainted into a Penn Central paint scheme shortly thereafter.
