📋 About This Mod

When using frame gen, my game would crash constantly any time I fast travel or load into a building. This targeted Engine.ini file fixes that.

Description

Resolves recurring crashes, driver timeouts, and hard freezes that occur when fast traveling or loading new zones with Frame Generation enabled in The Outer Worlds 2.

In Unreal Engine 5. 4, rapid zone transitions tear down the rendering viewport while NVIDIA Streamline’s asynchronous frame generation queue is still dispatching compute commands. This race condition leads directly to an RHIInterruptThread access violation (GPUCrash dump Triggered / D3D Device Lost), followed by compounding texture pool exhaustion across multiple loads. This mod re-paces presentation handoffs, cleans up Reflex latency artifacts, and scales the engine's texture pool smoothly to your card's dedicated VRAM, allowing Frame Generation to remain fully active without crashing during level streaming.

Which file should I download?

Choose the download variant that matches your graphics card's dedicated VRAM capacity:

- 8 GB VRAM Tier (Main / Most Compatible):

Target GPUs: RTX 4060, RTX 4060 Ti (8GB), RTX 3070, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 2070, RTX 2080.

Sets texture streaming pool to 3,000 MB to avoid system memory overflow.

- 10 GB – 12 GB VRAM Tier:

Target GPUs: RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 3080, RTX 3060 (12GB).

Sets texture streaming pool to 4,500 MB for a balance of high-res caching and VRAM safety headroom.

- 16 GB VRAM Tier:

Target GPUs: RTX 4080, RTX 4080 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, RTX 4060 Ti (16GB), RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 GRE.

Sets texture streaming pool to 6,000 MB for enhanced asset retention in dense hubs.

- 24 GB – 32 GB VRAM Tier (Enthusiast):

Target GPUs: RTX 5090, RTX 4090, RTX 3090, RTX 3090 Ti, RX 7900 XTX.

Sets texture streaming pool to 8,000 MB for maximum texture retention without background pop-in.

Installation instructions

1. Download and extract the mod archive matching your GPU's VRAM tier.

2. Press Win + R, paste the following directory path into the Run dialog, and press Enter:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Arkansas\Saved\Config\Windows

(If you are on an older or specific branch, the path may end in WindowsNoEditor).

3. If an Engine.ini file already exists:

- Open both the modded file and your existing Engine.ini with a text editor (e.g., Notepad).

- Copy the configuration commands from this mod and paste them under the header at the bottom of your existing file.

4. If an Engine.ini does not exist:

- Drop the provided Engine.ini directly into this folder.

5. Critical Step: Right-click Engine.ini, select Properties, check the box for Read-only, and click Apply / OK. (Unreal Engine will purge custom configuration commands on launch if the file is not locked).

To Uninstall:

Uncheck Read-only on Engine.ini, delete the added lines, or delete the file entirely if it was created solely for this fix.

Main features

- Streamline Present Pacing: Enforces a one-tick presentation cadence and explicit frame tagging (r. Streamline. PresentDelay=1 and r. Streamline. TagPresent=1), preventing the generated frame queue from attempting to present into destroyed swapchain targets during loading screen fades.

- Eliminates RHIInterruptThread Panics: Stops thread synchronization conflicts between the DirectX 12 render loop and NVIDIA interposer binaries (nvwgf2umx.dll / VCRUNTIME140.dll).

- VRAM-Scaled Texture Streaming: Replaces the engine's hardcoded choke points with a stable ring-buffer tailored to your GPU tier, preventing asset pipeline lockups without spilling over into system RAM.

- Smooth Traversal Pacing: Uses amortized texture streaming (r. Streaming. AmortizeCPUToGPUCopy=1) to prevent traversal micro-stutter when sprinting across zone borders.

- Reflex Flash Indicator Disabled: Suppresses unintended debug latency marker bars on the edge of the screen during dialogue scenes.

- Zero Visual Downgrade: Preserves native texture quality, resolution scale, and Frame Generation smoothness without requiring you to drop your graphics presets.

Requirements

- Base Game: The Outer Worlds 2 (PC / Steam / Xbox App / PC Game Pass).

- Hardware: An NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-Series or RTX 50-Series graphics card (required to enable hardware Frame Generation).

- Prerequisites: Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) must be enabled in Windows Settings (System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings).

- Other Mods Required: None. This is a standalone configuration patch.
