It lost to Lockheed Martin's X-35 demonstrator which would soon be developed into the F-35 Lightning II. The X-32 is infamous for its gaping inlet design, which earned it criticisms to its appearance including pareidolia memes that portray the plane as grinning or laughing due to the huge inlet. Boeing's proposed production model, as recreated by this tech, aims to make the inlet less pronounced. It also does away with the delta-shaped wings and canted vertical tail fins in favor of more conventional swept-back wing assemblies as well as vertical and horizontal tails. These changes are meant to tackle the JSF's refined maneuverability and payload requirements at the request of the Navy. However, this improved design came too late for the existing prototype X-32s to be converted. This shortfall did not disqualify Boeing from the competition because the Navy's updated requirements were made eight months into the program, but Lockhead Martin's entry (i.e. X-35) already met the requirements straight up, becoming the world’s first flight that took off vertically, broke the speed of sound, and then landed vertically.
