📋 About This Mod

Realistic Human NPC AI

A complete overhaul of human NPC combat behavior in State of Decay 2

Overview

Undead Labs designed the human NPC AI with deliberate handicaps so the game stays accessible on Standard difficulty. NPCs only perceive enemies at ~30m, ignore who's actually attacking them, almost never dodge, forget targets in 5 seconds, and followers abandon fights the moment you move. This mod fixes all of that.

27 properties, 9 vanilla files, zero impact on the player or zombies. Human NPC behavior only.

What it changes

Perception and engagement range

  • []NPCs perceive hostiles at ~90m (vanilla: ~30m) — the "blind past 30m" problem is gone[/]

[]Aggro range matches perception so they actually engage what they see[/]

    []Long-range overwatch extended for sniper-style behavior[/]

[]Peripheral vision standardized at 160° (vanilla was inconsistent: 120° in some nodes, 180° in others)[/]

    []Close-proximity awareness expanded from 2. 5m to 6m[/]

    Threat prioritization

    • []The closest enemy is now the priority — no more ignoring the zombie biting them to shoot something 200m away[/]

[]Whoever is actively attacking the NPC becomes the target (vanilla weight was almost zero)[/]

[]NPCs react to gunfire direction, not only to hits taken[/]

[]Hostile humans properly ranked against zombie threats (vanilla ranked Bloater above an armed human)[/]

[]Wounded or out-of-stamina targets get tactical priority for finishing[/]

      Reactive combat

      • []NPCs actually dodge incoming fire (vanilla dodge chance was barely functional)[/]

[]Dodge cooldown reduced for continuous reaction, no spam[/]

[]Earlier dodge response to telegraphed zombie attacks[/]

[]NPCs prefer ranged engagement at distance instead of closing for melee when they have a gun[/]

        Target memory

        • []NPCs remember lost targets for 20s instead of 5s[/]

[]They investigate the last known position for longer[/]

[]In defend mode, active threats stay tracked for 40s instead of 10s[/]

          Follower behavior

          • []Followers no longer abandon a fight just because you moved — leash extended from ~9m to ~25m[/]

[]They engage hostiles around them properly, instead of only at 2. 5m as in vanilla[/]

[]Pursue enemies farther without giving up to return to you[/]

[]Maintain more distance from zombie hordes to avoid being swarmed[/]

            Combat flow

            • []Decisive retreat distance increased so NPCs actually leave a bad situation when they should[/]

              []Smarter spacing against zombie hordes[/]

              []Improved hazard awareness (fire, gas)[/]

              What it does NOT change

              • []The player — zero modifications. The player uses a separate controller; none of the modified properties exist for the player.[/]

[]Zombies — all zombie controllers (Feral, Juggernaut, Bloater, Screamer, common) are vanilla.[/]

[]Navigation and pathfinding — global systems untouched.[/]

[]Stealth, finishers, melee mechanics — vanilla.[/]

                Installation

Download the .pak file and place it in one of the following locations (press Win+R, paste the path, and hit Enter):

                • []Steam / Epic:

                  %LocalAppData%\StateOfDecay2\Saved\Paks[/]

                  []Microsoft Store / Game Pass:

                  Compatibility

[]Compatible with Update 38. 2 of State of Decay 2.[/]

[]Not compatible with other mods that edit the same core human AI files (AIController_Human, AITree_HumanCombat, etc.) — if two mods edit the same file, one will simply override the other. Use only one human AI mod at a time.[/]

[]Fully compatible with mods that edit ot

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

Realistic Human NPC AI overhauls human NPC behavior for more realistic combat. NPCs spot and engage hostiles at long range, prioritize threats, dodge fire, remember targets, and followers stay in fights. A gameplay mod with 106 endorsements and 7,552 downloads, last updated August 2026.

✨ Key Features

NPCs perceive and engage hostiles at long range
NPCs prioritize the closest or attacking threat
NPCs dodge incoming fire
NPCs remember targets
Followers no longer abandon fights when you move

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Solid endorsement-to-download ratio (106 endorsements, 7.5k downloads) shows players are sticking with it
  • Makes NPCs actually feel like they have survival instincts — long-range engagement and threat prioritization are game-changers
  • Followers sticking in fights is a huge QoL win for anyone tired of babysitting AI

⚠️ Cons

  • Last updated August 2026 — if the game has patched since, expect potential compatibility hiccups
  • Overhauling AI can conflict with other gameplay mods that touch NPC behavior or combat
  • No mention of performance impact — AI improvements often cost frames, so watch your FPS in big fights
🎯 Is This For You?
For players who want smarter, more tactical NPC combat and hate when followers bail mid-fight. If you're running a heavily modded setup with other AI or combat overhauls, check for conflicts first. Skip if you prefer arcadey, simple AI — this adds complexity.

💡 Beginner Tips

  • If you're on a version of the game that's newer than the mod's last update, test in a small skirmish first to catch any AI glitches.
  • Pair this with a combat overhaul that adds more enemy types to really see the threat-prioritization shine.
  • Watch your performance in large battles — if FPS drops, try reducing NPC count or disabling other AI mods.
