📋 About This Mod
Linked Phaser 'Sound Restoration'
An attempt to restore the linked phasers to their original sound. Because of how the sounds are managed in game a true restoration via audio swap is impossible. This changes the default beam sound, rep dbb sound, and just slightly changes the DHC sound. A full explanation provided below the instal instructions.
To install, copy the included 'localdata' folder to the STO install directory: 'Star Trek Online\Star Trek Online\Live\' Yes there are double 'Star Trek Online' folders.
For example if you are using steam you'll be going here:
Steam\steamapps\common\Star Trek Online\Star Trek Online\Live\
Correct file setup: Star Trek Online\Star Trek Online\Live\localdata\sound\win32
---------------------------------------------------
So the linked weapons. I thought this was going to be so easy but it was a nightmare. The way it works
These sounds are located in 'M_P_Player_Space_CB26.fsb' and in there we see four sounds for the standard phaser sounds.
phaserbolt2
phaserboltheavy2
To figure out what was what I replaced them all with a silent mp3 and then put their default sound in loading in the game and testing. What I discovered was the following
phaser = nothing
phaserbolt = DHC extra sound
phaserbolt2 = ALL
phaserboltheavy2 = Rep DBB extra sound
I was shocked and infuriated when I realized one sound was used for everything meaning it would be nearly impossible to get all the sounds to be the same and well then I found out it basically was after a week of testing.
The final version of the mod after all the work uses the following
Space_CB26_Phaser -> DSC_TOSPhaserBolt
Space_CB26_PhaserBolt -> Space_CB26_PhaserBolt
Space_CB26_PhaserBolt2 -> DSC_TOSPhaserBolt
Space_CB26_PhaserBoltHeavy2 -> Space_CB35_32cPhaserBoltHeavy
The 32cphaserboltheavy was the closest sounding to matching the tosphaserbolt sound so the rep DBB and basics could sound as close together as possible to my ear. I'm still not 100% sure what the first sound is, I'm guessing maybe NPCs or the fighters but I went and changed it all the same. If anyone ever notices any issues I'll gladly revert it and fix it. Beam Overload still uses the default sound and no changes to anything else with these that I'm aware of.
