The scripted giant that appears outside of Whiterun with the companions battling it is a weakling. It only has 100 health, so by the time you arrive, usually the Companions have finished it off, earning you their scorn for not helping.
I used to increase the difficulty of the game to 'expert' every time I ran up to Whiterun to give myself a shot at getting an arrow off, but got sick of doing that.
Now I present you with a TOUGHER GIANT.
This mod makes it 10 times as strong, and twice as tall.
No need to fear it will use its club to launch you into space - this giant is unique and doesn't do that. It has plenty of health now, so you should be able to join in and earn Aela's respect.
Script free, and safe to uninstall or install any time.
This mod doesn't impact the difficulty of any other giants in game, just that one giant event outside Whiterun.
