Thane is a highly trained Alik'r warrior that grew up in Hammerfell as a noble. His mother is a councilor to the kingdom of Hammerfell and his father is a high ranking Alik'r mercenary. They decided to start Thane's training when he was about 5 years old; he would then join the Alik'r about 11 years later. He worked his way up the ranks taking only the most demanding contracts. The people of Hammerfell gave Thane the nickname "The Godstriker"  after a certain contract.

There was a local folktale of a giant godlike beast that would steal children at night and eat the harvest from nearby farms. Thane's contract was to hunt and kill this so called 'godlike' creature. He followed the tracks to a nearby cave and fought a rigorous battle between man and beast. Thane was victorious and brought back the beast's pelt and was named "Thane the Godstriker".

His next contract brought him to Skyrim with two other mercenaries. They were tasked with finding a woman and bringing her back to Hammerfell. The three of them arrived at the Frostfruit Inn in Rorikstead at nightfall. Thane overheard the other two men talking whilst having a drink at the bar. They said they were planning to kill the woman as per the REAL contract. Thane was lied to. So he made a plan to execute the two men the next day. The two men left for Whiterun after Thane told them he would check out Markarth. He was actually planning to kill them when they returned.
