📋 About This Mod

This mod has been deprecated in favor of Oblivionesque Lockpicking Redone. I'll still fix game-breaking bugs if they come up, but the new version is the one that will be receiving any new features I come up with.

What this mod does

  • []Adds a pin-based lockpicking minigame like in Oblivion

[]Difficulty depends on skill level, lock level, and lockpicking perks

[]By default, the new minigame replaces the default lockpicking minigame wherever possible; there are some examples in an optional download for how to restrict it to only some locks

[]You can also auto-attempt locks like in Oblivion; the chance of success is generally pretty far behind your chances of manually picking the lock, though, and some investment in lockpicking perks is necessary to have a reasonable chance

I tried to balance the minigame to be roughly comparable to vanilla lockpicking.  Overall I think advanced locks are harder and simple locks are easier vs vanilla.  There are settings in the MCM to control difficulty in a few ways.  Let me know if something feels unbalanced or unpolished in your game; I expect some of the default timing and difficulty scaling settings will need to be refined.

Also, I'm not very artistically inclined as you can probably tell from the mod images.  Check out these replacement textures!

[]If you'd like to have a crack at making a set of textures yourself, replacers are always welcome.  Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the format etc.  I've been told that DDS Texture Converter is one way to produce files of the right type (with the 'uncompressed' option); using texconv from powershell / by dragging files directly onto it has also worked for me in the past.

The way the minigame works is:

[]The number of pins in a lock is based on that lock's level (one pin for novice locks, up to five pins for master locks)

[]You can move your lockpick left and right to any pin (default controls A and D), move your lockpick upwards to try pushing a pin (default control W), and try to set a pin in place (default control spacebar), which will work only if done shortly after the pin hits the top

[]All pins must be set in order to open the lock

[]How quickly the pin moves and how long you have to set it depend on your skill level and what perks you have

[]As in Oblivion, there is a slow and fast pin movement speed, and setting the pin is easier on the slow movement speed

[]Unlike Oblivion, slow vs fast movement is governed by an internal difficulty stat for each pin; depending on the lock state, one pin is

🤖 AI-enhanced — based on mod data

Lightweight gameplay overhaul with 209 endorsements and 15,897 downloads.

📊 Pros & Cons

✅ Pros

  • Community-approved with 209 endorsements and over 15k downloads.
  • ESPFE format keeps your load order clean and plugin limit friendly.
  • Last updated April 2024, so it's still fresh for current setups.

⚠️ Cons

  • Only one feature listed—no details on how the minigame works or if it's customizable.
  • May conflict with other lockpicking overhauls or mods that alter the lock interface.
  • Small niche mod; if you're not into Oblivion nostalgia, this might not be for you.
🎯 Is This For You?
For Skyrim players who miss Oblivion's lockpicking and want a change from the vanilla tumbler minigame. Also great for modders who want a lightweight, ESPFE-friendly gameplay tweak. Skip if you're happy with vanilla lockpicking or prefer more comprehensive overhauls.
📦 Install:Easy· Under 1 minute

💡 Beginner Tips

  • Since it's an ESPFE, just drop it into your mod manager and activate—no extra patches needed.
  • If you use other lockpicking mods, check load order to ensure this one takes priority.
  • Test it on a low-level lock first to get a feel for the new mechanic before tackling master locks.
