📋 About This Mod
Based on user feedback I've reworked most of the voices in the mod to better reflect the original voice types and reduce the intensity and volume where appropriate.
Existing users can download the 'voices only' file in optional files and overwrite the existing sound folder, the ESP has not been changed.
A mod to make all vanilla voiced NPCs have nightmares while they're asleep. Every vanilla voice type is covered with their own unique nightmare sound, with varying length, intensity and volume. NPCs added by other mods will automatically work if they use a vanilla voice type.
Whenever an NPC is asleep, they will have a chance to have a bad dream and cry out in their sleep, with other NPCs nearby reacting. Most times the other NPC will just say "shh!" or "What's all the commotion?" but certain voice types have extra dialogue. Sometimes the NPC having the nightmare might "shh!" themselves.
The dreams have a random (configurable) chance of triggering every 12 hours in-game. The default chance is 50%, so every 12 hours, there will be a 50% chance of hearing a nightmare. It's meant to be fairly rare so you won't be hearing them all the time.
You can alter the random chance by opening up the console and typing set jb1dreams to x - where x is the number you want. For example if you want 25% chance type set jb1dreams to 25 - the game will save this so you only need to do it once. If you want to see what the current percentage is type help jb1dreams in the console.
Ever wondered why the NPCs in Dawnstar say they're having nightmares every night, but never do? Well now they do. Until you've completed the quest 'Waking Nightmare', NPCs in Dawnstar will get double the chance to have a nightmare, with more specific reactions from other NPCs.
Once you complete that quest, Dawnstar residents will get the same chance of nightmares as all other locations.
Dawnstar nightmares before you complete Waking Nightmare are set to repeat more often with no random chance.
I've released an alternate version that covers Dawnstar only.
The mod is flagged as ESL so it won't take up a slot in your load order and is a very lightweight mod.
The mod was made with the older creation kit so is compatible with all versions of Skyrim SE/AE.
There's a vanilla bug with new dialogue sometimes not firing after installing a mod. If you don't hear any dialogue, just make a save and load it which should fix this if you encounter it.
Install like any other mod using your favourite mod manager. It is safe to install mid-game.
It should be compatible with pretty much anything.

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community-approved with 463 endorsements and 82k downloads—clearly a hit.
- ESL flagged means you can slot it into a full load order without worrying about the 255 plugin cap.
- Lightweight and focused—does exactly what it says without bloating your game.
⚠️ Cons
- No compatibility notes provided, so it might conflict with other mods that alter NPC AI or schedules.
- Last updated in October 2024—could be outdated if you're on the latest Skyrim version, though ESL mods are usually resilient.
- The feature set is narrow—if you're looking for broader immersion overhauls, this might feel too subtle.
For Skyrim players who want a subtle, lore-friendly touch that makes NPCs feel more alive. If you're into immersion mods that add small, believable details without overhauling the whole game, this is for you. Skip if you prefer big, flashy changes or if you're on a strict mod list with limited space.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Since it's ESL flagged, you can safely add it to an existing load order without worrying about plugin limits.
- Use a mod manager like Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 to install and manage it—it's a simple drag-and-drop.
- If you notice NPCs acting oddly, check for conflicts with other mods that edit NPC AI packages or schedules.
