📋 About This Mod
This is a plugin that re-enables the mourning interaction that is present in the Vanilla game files but was left disabled by Bethesda.
Unique NPCs can now express anger/grief after a relative or friend dies, run away to be left alone for a moment, or greet you differently as they mourn.
This feature is currently present in both Cutting Room Floor by Arthmoor and Haunting and Mourning by vagonumero12 (ported to SE by KainThePheonix), but as you can probably guess these two mods do other stuff as well. I would recommend checking both of them out if you haven't.
I figured I'd make a plugin that restored that piece of cut content and only that, as I wasn't that interested in restoring the Haunting interaction, so here it is.
Compatibility:
Should be compatible with pretty much everything but you never know.
AI Overhaul apparently implements a mourning interaction too, albeit differently. This isn't incompatible with it, but it's not impossible that there could be some redundant interactions if you use both. CRF also does the same thing as this and mnikjom has a patch for AIO and CRF, however that patch doesn't touch anything related to mourning. So if CRF doesn't conflict with AIO on the mourning interaction, then neither should this. I will personally use this alongside AIO, so if I ever encounter anything weird I'll be sure to mention it here.

My other mods:
Natural Hair Colors
Faster Horse Dismount SSE
Faster Reanimation
Less Bright Teeth for Expressive Facegen Morphs
Hooded Skeleton Corpse Fix for WACCF
Majestic Mountains - Mesh Tangent Space Fixes
If you're wondering, the NPCs in those screenshots are not using the hair colors from my mod Natural Hair Colors as I was testing some things with facegen.
If you do want to improve those hair colors I would recommend you check it out, or Mild Hair Colors which it was inspired from.

✨ Key Features
📊 Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Community favorite with 707 endorsements and over 125k downloads.
- Taps into unused vanilla content, so it feels like a natural fix rather than a hack.
- Adds emotional depth to NPC reactions without overhauling the whole game.
⚠️ Cons
- Last updated in 2021, so it may not be compatible with the latest game patches.
- Only affects unique NPCs, so generic NPCs won't show the new behavior.
- Potential conflicts with other mods that alter NPC AI or dialogue.
For immersion-focused players who want NPCs to react realistically to deaths. If you're tired of NPCs acting like nothing happened after a quest kills someone, this is for you. Skip if you want broad gameplay changes—this is a small, targeted fix.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Place the plugin in your Data folder and enable it in your mod manager or launcher.
- If you use other mods that edit NPC AI, load this one after them to avoid conflicts.
- Test with a character death to see the new reactions—it's subtle but noticeable.
