📋 About This Mod
A bandit falls. You search his body and find twelve unfamiliar coins. They're not Septims—and in this town, that means they're worth about half.
Overview
Your travels through Eastmarch have left your purse heavy with Ulfric coins—payment from Windhelm merchants for your hard-won loot.
Eventually, you head west, passing through Whiterun on your way to Solitude.
In Whiterun, you notice something odd: the same number of Ulfric coins that bought you a fine drink in Windhelm won't buy you nearly as good a mead here.
By the time you reach Solitude, a merchant looks at your coins and scoffs. "Ulfrics? Rebel coin. Around here, that's worth about as much as a pebble off the road. I'll take it if you insist, though."
Night falls in a city that is not yours. There is no Imperial gold left in your purse, and none of the local coin either—but the rebel money you earned in the east still fills the bag.
The innkeeper pulls a face at it. Then he slides a key across the counter anyway. At his price, naturally.
The next morning, you find a Khajiit caravan camped outside the city walls. The Khajiit only shrugs. "This one asks no questions. Mede coin, for Solitude, yes? But such a favor does not come cheap."
Nobody refuses you. Every merchant who weighs your money is answering a question you never asked — what can I do with this after you walk away? Borders of Coin gives each of them their own answer, and leaves you travelling through an economy that was already running before you arrived.
This is a comprehensive extension patch for M. I. N. T. (Mint-Issued National Tenders).
This patch serves three major purposes: 1) Massively expanding the regional currency economic zones across Skyrim, 2) Letting you choose which coin you pay with — at the merchant's counter, at the inn, at the stable and house, and even in a beggar's cup — and 3) Overhauling the distribution mechanics to improve stability, reduce script load, and ensure maximum compatibility without editing vanilla records.
Features
── Gameplay ──
1. Massive Expansion of Economic Zones
This patch breathes life into the regional economy by significantly expanding where currencies are used:
-
[]Expanded Ulfric Zone: It has been expanded to cover the entire Stormcloak rebellion sphere, including Winterhold and The Pale (Dawnstar).[/]
[]New Mede Zone: Introduces a brand new Imperial economic zone. Citizens, merchants, and bandits in Haafingar (Solitude, Dragon Bridge) will now actively use Mede coins.[/]
A currency zone is a hold, not a city wall. As of 2. 3. 0, the border of an economic zone is the hold itself.
In practice this means the quiet places are no longer left out. Kynesgrove trades in Ulfrics because Eastmarch does. The Nightgate Inn takes them too — it stands in The Pale, however far from Dawnstar it feels. Ivarstead deals in Septims at Riften's rates, because it belongs to the Rift.
Settlements added by other mods are covered automatically. Whether a place uses a hold's coin is decided by which hold the game says it sits in, so a village, town or inn added by another mod falls into its hold's economy the moment you walk in. No patch is required, and none is provided, because none is needed.
(Optional) Dwarven Coin as Loot: If C. O. I. N. is installed, Nchuark coins get a chance to turn up in Markarth's pockets and strongboxes instead of gold — loot variety, nothing more. This is not a currency zone: the Reach still prices everything in Septims, and Nchuark is just one more coin you can sell or exchange like any other. The installer asks whether you want it.
2. One City, Several Coins — Choose How You Pay
Speak to any merchant who offers services and a new dialogue option appears before the trade window ever opens: ask to pay in a different currency.
Each region offers the coins that plausibly circulate there. The list never includes the local currency — that is already what the counter runs on. In Solitude you can ask to settle in Septims or Ulfrics. In Windhelm, Septims or Medes. In Whiterun, Ulfrics or Medes. On Solstheim, any of the three.
Dunmer characters carry one further option: they can ask to pay in Drams anywhere in Skyrim. Their people's money travels with them, and the merchants who know them know it.
Choose, and the barter menu opens in that currency. Close it, and everything reverts. Nothing is locked in, and nothing is permanent.
Benefit: A hold is no longer bound to a single coin. You decide which purse to open — and the merchant prices the deal accordingly.
3. The Same Coin Is Not Worth the Same Everywhere
A coin has a face value. A region has its own appetite for foreign money. Borders
