Without mods, Nirnroot were oppressive. However, many mods change how sounds propagate, and furthermore, you might have a mod that makes the Nirnroot less piercing directly by replacing the sound. This mod is designed to help restore their, uh, defining characteristic.
The sound shouldn't be that much louder when you're standing on top of them, but should be able to be identified from a bit further away. I'm not going to make a comparison because it's impossible to demonstrate how it would sound in your game with a recorded and compressed sample from mine. Just give it a go if you're interested, and if it bothers you, you can safely uninstall at any time!
